Burl; that twisted part of the tree, so incredibly and wonderfully imperfect to make it even more unique by color, richness, uniqueness, spectacular nature and prestige.
We have seen it on luxury cars dashboards with a thickness of a few tenths of a millimeter, often painted and polished, and only for this reason, we have understood the level of the brand of the car where we were sitting, or we were looking at from the outside in some cities or particular places in the world.
To obtain a walnut burl floor, you start with a raw material that requires such a high level professionalism and craftsmanship, comparable only to the processing required to obtain a diamond from a rough stone.
Working a piece of wood, turning it into deformed elements with a thickness of about 6/7 mm in the rough, analyze them for color, grain structure, reading its design even when the surface roughness for the just made saw cutting makes it very difficult , drawing them into a harmonious varied compositions or realizing four pieces compositions that create a center in the obtained wooden element and a continuity of the grain even moving away from the center outwards.
The burl requires a laborious process that starts from the cutting of the raw material and continues with the manual trimming of individual pieces and their jointing with the cold gluing on paper. It is an artistic knowledge which, unfortunately, is disappearing as the raw material itself ,more and more difficult to find.
The original raw piece with a thickness of 6/7 mm, is repeatedly sanded to calibrate it, plate it on a frame and sand it again even before being subjected to the finishing stage with many steps done by hand with products such as oils and waxes, to make it suitable for use on floors and walls, to obtain a final thickness of at least about 2.5 mm burl. A goal really difficult to achieve, due to the nature of the raw material and its technical characteristics. Upon request, the burl veneered wood , so the only noble part, is supplied without being tackled on a frame and counterbalanced, because it is placed directly on the floor as marquetry or used for furniture items or other uses in prestigious contexts in the world.
Each piece is unique, each piece is true, each piece is a work of natural art masterfully produced , with the passion and the pride of being able to do what is unfortunately going to disappear, and this is the real regret of all the masters who do not have and do not find heirs.
The grain of the burl can be jointed according to a drawing, a symmetry obtained by splitting the surface area of the wooden element into four equal parts into which the grains create a continuum going from one quadrant to another of the same item. The fulfillment of the centered design, involves a great deal of waste and requires special attention to the search for the pieces so that the design is symmetrical.
It seems accidental, but it is not. In the “Palladian” design various pieces of burl are joined ad opus, irregularly, almost random, however the choice of each piece is not random, it requires a lot of attention and patience in order to achieve harmony in every single piece obtained and an overall harmony among the various pieces so that there are no splashes of color or of grain in the whole that might visually disturb the eye.
It’s been several weeks since the raw material in its natural state entered into the laboratory to be processed and brought to its maximum splendor and prestige. After several sanding steps and an equal number of surface treatment with oils and waxes, its personality, its charisma ,is at its highest expectations.
